Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer fencing classes?
There is a kids' class currently running on Monday nights from 6:30-7:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. to ~12:30 p.m.  The class is mainly attended by children ranging in age from ~9-13 years of age and of beginner-intermediate skill level.  Please contact us if your child wishes to attend.

We offer other group fencing classes as interest and numbers allow, so follow us on Facebook or keep an eye on this page for information on any group lessons that might be in the works.

How old should my child be to start fencing?
Generally, we recommend 9 as the minimum age for children to start fencing. Of course, if your child is younger than 9 and excited about learning to fence, we will not say no. We welcome anyone who loves swords and is eager to learn more about them.

I'm too old to fence...right?
While we recommend 9 as the minimum age to start fencing, there is no maximum.

What do I need to start fencing? Do I need to buy anything to take lessons?
Corsair provides all of the necessary equipment for beginning fencing students.  Please wear athletic clothing/clothing that you can move in and pants that cover your knees.  We'll take care of everything else!

Is fencing violent?
No. Fencing is not a violent sport. While sport fencing is based on historical combat styles, the rules and equipment that we use for modern sport fencing are designed to prevent anyone from getting hurt.

Will I look like a pirate?
Modern sport fencing draws heavily from historical dueling styles and rules, but has evolved into an efficient, linear sport with a bunch of cool technology. A lot of the footwork and blade work do cross over, and if you're really interested in learning some rapier and other historical styles, coaches Vincent, Brendon, and Adam would be thrilled to show you the ropes.
